Hello amazing readers!
Ok… so… here we go. I know the New Year did not start off well for a huge amount of people in the US and I was devastated to hear the news about New Orleans. It’s a city that’s very close to my heart (and maybe yours as well)? I have spent at least a year there, maybe more, over the span of my lifetime and it’s a beautiful, special, vibrant city that is unlike any other. They’ve endured too much tragedy and so have many other places. Not to get political but… it’s true :(
Here’s a photo I recently found of myself and three other fellow writers in front of Anne Rice’s house when we met at an amazing writer’s retreat there. It was awhile ago and we’re all still friends and talk regularly. Please check them out! Links are below the photo.
I co-wrote the story The Soul Collector with Cameron Coral on this particular writer’s retreat. It’s horror, and if you haven’t read it, it’s of my favs, the link is above and here.
My NY Day was also fraught with some disturbances. I ran into a group of people trying to help a dog who had run away out of fear from the fireworks. Did you know that fireworks can be silent? I’m not a fan anyway, from a noise and environmental perspective and was speaking with a Portuguese friend about it. Did you know they can use drones to create light shows that rival fireworks? Have a look-see here. It’s interesting to note that fireworks were originally developed in China 1,000 years ago and China still remains the top producer but this drone “show” is in China!
Back to the dog: everyone tried to help her. I had dog food in my pocket but she wouldn’t eat it. I told the group I would keep her overnight and take her to a vet the next day to have her chip read. She ran away, she was so scared. We tried to catch her. I had to leave to teach a class but gave them my leash. I heard a few blocks later, she got hit by a car and was so worried, but yesterday they returned the leash and said that she’s okay!!!!
And now even more positive news:
I will be sending out a minimum of two newsletters a month this year with one guest author PNR freebie in each. This month you’ll get three! And be sure to check my Amazon author page regularly. There’s almost always something there that’s free or on-sale. Right now it’s the Boxed Set of “Chronicles of Tara”. All three books are on sale for .99 cents through the 10th of January!
Tara Excerpt:
Little fireflies are flitting above me when I open my eyes. For several moments I can’t remember where I am, but everything is cozy. How am I sleeping in a hammock outside? Then I remember and bolt straight up. I’m nestled at the top of a tree in a hammock of leaves.
The fireflies move closer—not fireflies, but fairies so small they make the other sparrow-sized fairies I’ve met look like giants.
“She’s awake,” one says, its voice shrill, yet faint.
“Quick, go tell Sabin,” says another.
And the entire bunch darts away like bees swarming to their hive.
I gulp down massive amounts of air, like a tuba player getting ready to blow. So many questions rattle around. Why didn’t those fairies attack me like the others? Who is Sabin? How the hell am I going to get down from this tree?
“The guardian is awake,” says my silky, incorporeal voyeur.
“Can you please show yourself?” I try not to show my fury. I do not appreciate having my mind messed with. And just what did he see in my “dreams”? But as annoying as it was to be put to sleep, this is still the first creature since waking in this crazy land who hasn’t tried to kill me outright.
“I occupy only air.”
“How can that be?”
“I’m a sylph. We are elementals of the air, no less real than you and your people.”
“And your wet nose earlier?”
“Not my nose.” He actually giggles. “My form, as an icy breeze.”
I stretch my arms above my head and the leaf hammock tilts. I yelp, grabbing the sides to steady it and myself.
“You won’t fall, guardian. This tree won’t let you.”
“Why are you here? Talking to me, I mean?”
“Why?” His voice catches, the word carried away on the wind. “You’re the key. The answer we seek. The only one who can save us.”
“Me? I doubt that. I’m just a human lost in a strange land.”
